A matriarch’s legacy, rewritten in butter and fire: Inside Fat Ronnie’s West Village arrival

Ask for a naked Fat Ronnie and it can only get better from there. That’s the basic half-pound burger at Fat Ronnie’s, the new burger joint on Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs, which comes with the simple fixings of a beef patty and bun. There are also 22 toppings (30 by the end of the summer) that you can choose from, or the fish burger made with haddock, the turkey or veggie burger or the burrito burger, to name a few.

For Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP, coming to the Island from his home in Jackson, Miss., for a weeklong vacation this month was an easy choice. “It’s the Vineyard,” he said. “Everyone’s here.” He visited for the first time last summer to speak on a panel and decided then that he would be back. He has since been promoted to lead the nation’s largest social justice organization, and spending time on the Vineyard now lends itself to more than vacation.
